BC3 - 3rd Portable Hammond
So here's my third attempt at splitting a Hammond to get it in my
car. This time I went for the three box approach - one for the tone
generator (which doubles as a base for the whole thing), one for a
single manual and preamp, and one for a shortened second manual. Since
I only play left hand bass, I figured that I didn't need all those
octaves and presets on the lower manual.
Here are a couple of pictures of the main manual on the tone generator
base. The legs fold down onto the base when you lift off the manual.
I've taken the back and top off so you can all see inside it. The tg is
linked to the manual via four 25W shielded cables and D type
connectors. There is very little noise or crosstalk produced. The bits
are from an old BC, with an M100 preamp used mainly for the percussion
(my toggle switches on the left - 2nd & 3rd can be selected
together!) and for the bass manual. I wired up all four of the
drawbar sets to preset keys, (E and Eb as well as B and Bb).
Here are some closeups of the innards:
The second manual is an M100 upper manual with the lefthand drawbars
sawn off, which sits on top of the main manual. It's wired into the
main manual via three 25W cables (D type connectors) and it's
transformer output goes into the RCA phono input on the preamp. It's
also been painted black since the picture was taken.
There's a Leslie 145/147/251 style socket on the pack panel, with a
1/4" jack out in parrallel.
Here's a couple of raytraced pics I made of it when I designed the thing - back and front.
